When I started Jiu Jitsu, I thought everything was going to be a walk in the park.
I wrestled in high school, and I was a strength and conditioning coach in collegiate athletics. I thought that once I learned some technique I would be unstoppable.
Unfortunately, I forgot how different preparing for a combat sport is from just lifting weights, and that even though I knew what to do, I still had to put in the work.
My 1st tournament – I completely gassed after one match.
My 2nd tournament – I puked in between matches all the way to the finals.
I've never been more embarrassed. Everyone at my gym knew that I was a strength coach, and the shame I felt for not showing that on the mats was beyond words.
That's when I knew I needed to make a change.
I dove back into the literature and developed a system that would help me excel on the mats.
After a few months of implementing it, I stopped puking completely, I was rag dolling 90% of my opponents, and I was feeling like I could take on anyone.
"I Was Getting Injured 3 Times a Year. Each One Took Me Off The Mats for 6 Weeks."
Nick was an out-of-shape hobbyist carrying 50 extra pounds. His body was breaking down faster than his technique was improving.
5 months after joining FPI, he dropped from 194 to 154 lbs and stopped getting injured entirely.
He's been injury-free for over 2 years and now feels like the strongest person in his bracket.
